This project involved the upgrade of car parking and accessible walkways to enhance visitor access and mobility within the gardens, particularly for individuals with mobility challenges.

The works included the construction of a new site crossover, car park, entry fence, and an automated gate to improve accessibility and security.

The pedestrian walkways were designed with a combination of elevated structures and slab-onground paths, ensuring seamless navigation throughout the gardens. Additionally, the existing swimming pool was repurposed into an ornamental reflection pond featuring a recirculated and treated water system, adding to the site’s aesthetic and environmental value.

To further enrich the visitor experience, a new irrigation system was installed to support the gardens’ sustainability. This project aligns with the University of Queensland’s (UQ) mission to enhance heritage interpretation and visitor engagement by incorporating several display panels and viewing platforms along the walkways.

Through these improvements, the gardens provide a more inclusive, educational and visually appealing environment, ensuring accessibility while preserving their cultural and historical significance.
